Implantable medical devices (IMD) and neuroprostheses are finding applications in new therapies thanks to advancements in microelectronics, sensors, RF communications, and medicine, which have resulted in embedding more functions in IMDs that occupy smaller spaces down to millimeters and consume less power, while offering therapies for more complex diseases and disabilities. I will address the latest developments in key building blocks for state-of-the-art IMDs.

Although optical sensors incorporating grating inscribed and etched fibres are now sufficiently mature and well established in the market, however, designs based on more exotic nanowires and photonic crystal fibres are becoming increasingly important and showing much improved sensitivity by accessing a larger evanescent field. Similarly, novel planar design concepts, such as the silicon slot guide-based design is showing even greater promise, allowing the exploitation of well-developed CMOS fabrication technologies for potentially low-cost sensor elements.

With the advent of wearable sensors and internet of things (IoT), there is a new focus on electronics which can be bent so that they can be worn or mounted on non-planar objects. Due to large volume (billions of devices), there is a requirement that the cost is extremely low, to the extent that they become disposable. The flexible and low-cost aspects can be addressed through additive manufacturing technologies such as inkjet, screen and 3D printing. This talk introduces additive manufacturing as an emerging technique to realize low cost, flexible and wearable wireless communication and sensing systems.

Physically compliant electronics are scientifically intriguing, mechanically complex, ‎technologically ‎challenging but with huge socio-economical potential. Until now the target applications ‎for ‎flexible electronics have been limited to displays, solar cells, printed batteries, wearables, and ‎implantable. However, with the emergence and growth of Internet of Things (IoT) devices ‎worldwide ‎from nearly 27 billion in 2017 to 125 billion in 2030, in this PhD research, expanding the ‎horizon of ‎applications for flexible electronics toward existing “things” will be explored. Low-cost sustainable materials as active electronic materials and a ‎Do-It-Yourself (DIY) integration strategy is used to build “Add-on” standalone sensory system which can be ‎attached to any ‎existing things like a decal. Such electronics can also be embedded in newly minted ‎devices specially ‎using additive methods.

Liquid Metal-Based Inertial Sensors for Motion Monitoring and Human Machine Interfaces

In this dissertation, the development of novel practical resistive and capacitive-type inertial sensors using liquid metal as a functional proof mass material is presented. Utilizing the unique electromechanical properties of liquid metal, the novel inertial sensor design confines a graphene-coated liquid metal droplet inside tubular and 3D architectures, enabling motion sensing in single and multiple directions. Combining the graphene-coated liquid metal droplet with printed sensing elements offers a robust fatigue-free alternative material for rigid, proof mass-based accelerometers. Resistive and capacitive sensing mechanisms were both developed, characterized, and evaluated. Emerging rapid fabrication technologies such as direct laser writing and 3D printing were mainly adopted, offering a scalable fabrication strategy independent of advanced microfabrication facilities. The developed inertial sensor was integrated with a programmable system on a chip (PSoC) to function as a stand-alone system and demonstrate its application for real-time- monitoring of human health/ physical activity and for soft human-machine interfaces. The developed inertial sensor architecture and materials in this work offer a new paradigm for manufacturing these widely used sensors that have the potential to complement the performance of their silicon counterparts and extend their applications.

After graduation, he worked as a Design Engineer in a ‎Pakistan-US based startup Cowlar©. He then availed his Master’s degree in electrical engineering from ‎Georgia Institute of Technology, USA in 2016 under Fulbright Scholarship. Her research interests include sensors, actuators, flexible and soft electronics for environmental applications. She received the KAUST Graduate Fellowship for her MS/Ph.D. program. She is a student member of the IEEE and Saudi Council of Engineers. After graduating from the SAMA labs, she joined Tufts University, USA, as a PhD student.

Fahad Alam

Dr. Fahad Alam is currently a postdoc at SAMA lab. He received his MSc and MTech from AMU Aligarh, India, in 2009 and 2012, respectively, and PhD from IIT Kanpur, India in 2017. He worked as a Postdoc, in Khalifa University Abu Dhabi from April 2018 to March 2022. He has previously received N-PDF, India, and EU-India (IITK-University of Groningen) exchange fellowship. My research focuses on designing efficient interfaces between the analog and digital domains through the development of low-power, high-performance CMOS interface circuits. The interface circuit encompasses key components such as amplifiers, filters, comparators, analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), each of which must be carefully optimized to meet the specific requirements of the target application. By addressing the challenges in analog-digital interfacing, this work aims to contribute to the advancement of integrated circuits and systems that can seamlessly connect real-world analog signals to their digital counterparts, with potential applications in sensor interfaces, data acquisition systems, and mixed-signal electronics. The research involves circuit design, simulation, integration, and experimental evaluation to create novel interface circuit topologies and techniques that improve power efficiency, speed, and overall performance.
