  In this thesis, we focus on the design and development of 4D printed sensors. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are used as the active sensing medium as they have proven to be ideal for application in sensors due to their high electric conductivity, stability, and mechanical flexibility. The effect of a heat-shrinkable substrate on the electronic and structural properties of CNTs is analyzed in depth, followed by the application in temperature, humidity, and pressure sensors. The results show that the 4D effect results in a more porous yet more conductive film due to an increase in the charge carrier concentration, enabling an improved sensitivity of the devices and allowing us to tune the selectivity based on the shrinking percentage. The developed device was fabricated using a rapid, cost-effective technique that is independent of advanced fabrication facilities to expand its applications to low-resource settings and environments.

  Pulse-shaped signal characterization is a fundamental problem in signal processing. One recently developed tool available to analyze non-stationary pulse-shaped waveforms with a suitable peak reconstruction is semiclassical signal analysis (SCSA). SCSA is a signal representation method that decomposes a real positive signal y(t) into a set of squared eigenfunctions through the discrete spectrum of the Schrödinger operator which is of particular interest. Beginning with an introduction to the young method, this dissertation discusses the relevant properties of SCSA and how they are utilized in signal denoising and biomedical application. Based on this, different frameworks and methodologies are proposed to leverage the advantages of the SCSA, especially in the pulse-shaped signal analysis field.

  The Compound Semiconductor Weekend will focus on some of the most important research areas on the beautiful KAUST campus by the Red Sea. Semiconductor technology is a major foundation of the third and fourth Industrial Revolutions as well as the modern society. While silicon remains as the widest-employed semiconductor, compound semiconductors have emerged from lab research to becoming the second most widely used within a short period of time. This is because compound semiconductors could possess multiple superior key properties simultaneously. They include high speed, high power, and efficient light emission and absorption, as well as that they can be produced in large scale at low cost and are highly robust. As a result, they have become cornerstones of many crucial technologies including lighting, display, communication, space exploration, and electric vehicles. While semiconductor researchers are plowing deeper for those technologies, compound semiconductors attract increasing attention for future computing, memory, and quantum information science as the pursuit of Moore’s Law has slowed down dramatically when the size of silicon transistors is approaching the physical limit of a few atoms.

  Stochastic Geometry Energy Harvesting Wireless Networks UAV-enabled Communication Systems

  In this talk, we discuss a recently proposed mathematical framework that enables tractable analysis of LEO satellite-enabled communication systems while capturing the influence of satellites’ numbers and altitudes as well as the spatial distribution of earth stations. Firstly, we describe how the stochastic geometry-based framework is modeled and discuss its accuracy. Next, we provide a detailed example of where this framework can be used for coverage analysis. Furthermore, we discuss how this framework can be used to study routing and end-to-end latency analysis in such networks. Realistic values from existing constellations, such as OneWeb and Starlink, are further used as case studies in this talk.

  In this dissertation, the development of novel practical resistive and capacitive-type inertial sensors using liquid metal as a functional proof mass material is presented. Utilizing the unique electromechanical properties of liquid metal, the novel inertial sensor design confines a graphene-coated liquid metal droplet inside tubular and 3D architectures, enabling motion sensing in single and multiple directions. Combining the graphene-coated liquid metal droplet with printed sensing elements offers a robust fatigue-free alternative material for rigid, proof mass-based accelerometers. Resistive and capacitive sensing mechanisms were both developed, characterized, and evaluated. Emerging rapid fabrication technologies such as direct laser writing and 3D printing were mainly adopted, offering a scalable fabrication strategy independent of advanced microfabrication facilities. The developed inertial sensor was integrated with a programmable system on a chip (PSoC) to function as a stand-alone system and demonstrate its application for real-time- monitoring of human health/ physical activity and for soft human-machine interfaces. The developed inertial sensor architecture and materials in this work offer a new paradigm for manufacturing these widely used sensors that have the potential to complement the performance of their silicon counterparts and extend their applications.

  Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are now considered among the key enabling technologies for 6G systems. Empowered by the recent advances in meta-material, RISs are equipped with a large number of low-cost passive elements that allow for the modification of the radio waves in that they reflect, refract, and scatter radio signals in a controllable fashion to counteract the destructive effect of multipath fading. These features can be leveraged to transform the propagation environment into a smart space that can be programmable for the benefit of the communication application. Throughout this proposal, we study RIS-assisted systems from different perspectives, including performance analysis, system optimization, and channel estimation, to analyze and enhance the operation of such systems in different setups. Some possible future research directions to be considered are also highlighted.

Each of these technologies has its pros and cons; for example, acoustic technology reaches longer distances but is bandwidth limited, while underwater optical wireless communications (UOWCs) can support higher data rates at the cost of short ranges. Besides establishing communication links using these technologies, geographic data tagging of the underwater IoT nodes is also crucial and challenging for several applications. Hence, this talk will provide an overview of the rapidly evolving positioning systems and algorithms for different underwater technologies for location estimation of the underwater IoT nodes and their applications.

  In this talk, a distributed beam tracking scheme for millimeter-wave unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)- assisted communication systems is presented. In the considered systems, aerial node base (aNB) connects the ground vehicles (GV) through directive beams to mitigate the path loss. However, line-of-sight (LoS) blockage may result in the link disconnection, which leads to the corruption of observations. To solve this issue, we extend the one-to-one beam tracking into the multi-node cooperative beam tracking scheme.

  In this talk, we will consider an alternative approach for future networks: serve the users by antennas that are distributed over the coverage area. By shifting from a world where base stations are surrounded by users, to a world where each user is surrounded by antennas, we can deliver almost uniformly good data rates wherever the user is. This concept has recently been called Cell-Free Massive MIMO. A core practical challenge is to deploy such a distributed MIMO array affordably. One potential approach is to use radio stripes, which are cables with integrated antennas. We will take a close look at how these can be implemented and recent results on how communications algorithms can be designed to exploit their special characteristics.

  In social dilemmas, a class of multi-agent games, agents' rationality-based strategic interactions to learn a payoff-maximizing strategy would result in diminishing returns. Such games include the prisoner's dilemma and public goods game where individually rational decision making reults in all decision-making agents receiving smallest rewards. In this presentation, I will explain a new decision-making model that elicits cooperative behavior in social dilemmas. The model enables the social interaction (reciprocity) between agents in their decision making, which allows cooperative behavior to emerge. We discuss how methods for feedback system design and analysis can be applied to explain the emergence of cooperative behavior and how we can tune such behavior.

The proposed designs compose of core building blocks for any functional microprocessor, for instance, fundamental logic gates; arithmetic adder circuits; sequential latch, and flip-flop circuits; input/output (I/O) interface data converters, including an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and a digital-to-analog converter (DAC); system-level power management DC-DC converters and energy management power-gating scheme. Another contribution of this thesis is the study of device non-ideality and variations on the functionality of circuits. We have thoroughly investigated energy-efficient approximate computing with non-ideal transistors and relays for the next generation of ultra-low-power VLSI systems.

  Recognizing and localizing human activities in long-form untrimmed video is one of the most important applications of computer vision. This remains a difficult problem given the many challenges inherent to untrimmed video ranging from its large-scale nature to the need for rich video representation and context modeling. In an effort to better understand this problem, ActivityNet was proposed in 2015 to provide a large-scale benchmark to train and evaluate activity localization methods. Since then, it has become a standard in the community, and its annual workshop at CVPR has become a popular venue for research groups to compete and present their newest approaches. Despite the advances in the past several years, the performance of activity localization methods in video remains limited, especially in comparison with human performance. In this colloquium, I will give a compact view of the progress made in the task of temporal activity localization, identify some key remaining challenges, and present some future directions.

  Towards Miniaturized, Flexible and Wearable Wireless Communication and Sensing Systems for IoT Applications

  With the advent of wearable sensors and internet of things (IoT) applications, there is a new focus on electronics which can be compact, light-weight and flexible so that these can be worn or mounted on non-planar objects. Due to large volume (billions of devices), it is required that the cost is extremely low, to the extent that they become disposable. In the context of miniaturization and lower cost, concepts such as System-on-chip (SoC) where a complete system is realized on a single chip (integrated circuit (IC)) or System-on-package (SoP) where the package of the chip is made functional are beneficial. The flexible and low-cost aspects can be addressed through additive manufacturing technologies such as inkjet and screen printing. Two important aspects of any IoT system, “Sensing” and “Wireless Communication”, will be the focus of this talk. The SoC part of the talk will focus on integration of the antenna on the chip and ways of enhancing its efficiency despite the lossy Silicon substrate in conventional semiconductor manufacturing processes. Through a SoP design example, it will be shown how smart packaging of a chip can boost the performance without adding any additional components or cost. In the later part of the talk, additive manufacturing will be introduced as an emerging technique to realize low cost and flexible wireless communication and sensing systems. Various novel functional inks, such as conductive, dielectric, phase change and sensing materials will be shown. A multilayer process will be presented where dielectrics are also printed in addition to the metallic parts, thus demonstrating fully printed components. Finally, some printed sensor examples will be shown for remote health and environmental monitoring. The promising results of these designs indicate that the day when electronics can be printed like newspapers and magazines through roll-to-roll printing is not far away.

  This dissertation introduces flexible, lightweight, and robust Laser-Scribed Graphene (LSG) sensor solutions for detecting various physical parameters, such as strain, flow, deflection, force, pressure, temperature, conductivity, and magnetic field. Multifunctionality was obtained by exploiting the direct laser scribing process combined with the flexible nature of polyimide and the piezoresistivity of porous graphene. The outstanding properties of LSG, such as low cytotoxicity, biocompatibility, corrosion resistance, and ability to function under extreme pressure and temperature conditions, allowed targeting diverse emerging applications.

  This dissertation aims to investigate and address noisy ocean issues and build large-scale underwater sensor networks by optical communication and sensing technology. The dissertation proposes using UWOC and FC&S technology to replace the conventional acoustic communication technology and reduce the noise in the ocean. UWOC helps achieve high-speed wireless communications between sensors, vehicles, and even humans for UIoT. The significant challenges of developing UWOC systems are the complex underwater environment's attenuation, scattering, and turbulence effects. This dissertation studied the turbulence effects on the UWOC system’s performance and addressed the pointing-acquisition-and-tracking issues.
